The hostels of the once prestigious Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have become death traps.
Recent photos were released today by Juwairiya Ahmed and they show run-down spaces which are desperately in need of repairs – live wires dangle dangerously from electrical points, walls are unhealthily stained, cooking spaces are like old sewers, and the open mouths of restrooms spill into sleeping spaces. The hostels are death traps.
Founded in 1962, ABU Zaria, as it is fondly called, was one of the top research institutions in the country which boasts of impressive alumni who include the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former Vice President Namadi Sambo, and many others.
Now, the management of the famous school seems to pay less attention to students living quarters, leading to increasing run-down buildings begging for urgent renovation.
